When an autopsy is performed on a patient that is suspected of dying from heart failure, a very detailed heart dissection is performed. Each part of the heart is carefully examined to look for the cause of death. Here is a concept of an e-learning module we designed for forensic pathology students who have to learn how to perform a heart dissection. This module focuses on the dissection of the atrioventricular valve apparatus.

01 - Overview

02 - Why is a post mortem heart examination important?

Post mortem heart examinations are important for establishing different aspects of the patient’s death:

  • To determine if cardiac disease is present.

  • To determine whether the cardiac disease can be linked to a larger systemic disease.

  • To determine whether any cardiac disease can be inherited.

  • To determine whether the cardiac disease could have been treated.

  • To determine the cardiac disease was related to any drug use.

03 - Our Solution ✨

When designing an e-learning module, it is important to have clear hierarchies of information. The left-hand navigation bar allows you to quickly see how many sections are in the lesson. We utilized varying styles for the visualizations - ranging from 2d vector, to high level elaboration realism, to 3d models. Each style serves a unique purpose in communicating knowledge about the process.
