Adverse Events in Dermal Facial Filler

Scroll down to learn more about our work in visualizing the adverse events of facial fillers.

Client: Erasmus MC

The client approached us to create a graphical abstract that would accompany their research around the causes of redness, nodules, filler migration, and hardening associated with dermal filler injections. Their research explored how the formation of biofilm around dermal fillers resulted in these adverse effects.

02 - What is Biofilm?

Biofilms are a complex collective of 1+ more types of microorganisms that can grow on different types of surfaces. These colonies of microorganisms include bacteria, fungi, and protists.

A common form of biofilm is the plaque build up that collects on your teeth. However, biofilms can also form around injectible dermal facial fillers. As it forms, bacteria from the film leak out into the dermal layer of the skin. This can cause complications such as granulomas, nodules, filler migration, and filler hardening.

03 - Our Solution ✨

The key element of this piece was to convey the process from macro to micro. We  show how the biofilm that forms around the filler provides a breeding ground for bacteria that is so thick that antibiotics cannot penetrate. As a result, the bacteria transmitted by the filler begins to leach into the dermis. We chose a clean 3-column approach that quickly educates the viewers on the research findings.
